This subject introduces students to law, government, and criminal justice in Australia. It explores how laws are made, the influence of politics on law reform, the role of the media, protections for human rights, and the elements of criminal responsibility. It considers the historical treatment of First Nations peoples in Australia&#39;s legal system and the role that law plays in promoting justice and accountability. This knowledge provides a foundation for further study on criminal law and justice systems.

This unit gives students the opportunity to engage in the composition of a self-directed research project in their field of specialization. This unit necessitates students to thoroughly engage with the existing research on their topic, using it as a stepping-stone in developing their own research skills. Students will be accompanied in devising a research question, translate this question into a set of research tasks, synthesise an appropriate methodological framework, conduct a literature review, and write up the result of their research as a coherent long research essay. This research relies on utilizing academic secondary sources and does not require original empirical work.

Supervised Project in Security Studies

This unit equips students with a solid understanding of defense analysis, examining key questions related to strategic domains and grappling with contemporary challenges such as the impact of emerging technologies on defence and strategy. The unit introduces students to a range of analytical techniques and explores net assessment methods, providing them with the knowledge and skills to critically evaluate defense capabilities and challenges.

Defence Analysis and Net Assessment

This unit provides students with the opportunity to examine in depth a current and topical issue in security studies and criminology. The specific topic of the unit will differ each session, capitalizing on opportunities for departmental academics to present contemporary and cutting edge research in areas of emerging concern for the security of Australia, its region and the world.

Emerging Topics in Security Studies

This subject explores the international politics of the Indo-Pacific, focusing particularly on questions of international security and strategy. The aims of this course are as follows:<ul><li>To introduce you to the international politics of security and strategy in the Indo-Pacific through the lens of contested strategic spaces and geographic sub-regions;</li><li>To integrate an understanding of how the region’s security and strategic arrangements relate to the wider dynamics of international politics;</li><li>To engage with and utilise International Relations theories and concepts, in the context of Indo-Pacific security;</li><li>To provide the analytic and intellectual foundation for further academic research on the region and/or work which requires a sound understanding of the security and strategic dynamics of the contemporary Indo-Pacific;</li><li>To develop further students’ critical and analytical skills through the engagement with a diverse and challenging theoretical and empirical literature, interrogated through the online content material, assessments, and class participation.</li></ul>

This course introduces the principles, approaches and methods of criminal investigation and intelligence work. Security has traditionally been associated with the integrity of the state and its protection by military means. Since the end of the Cold War, however, international war and state survival seem less severe threats to security as compared to a range of new and evolving security challenges. The latter include climate change, pandemics, inequality and economic underdevelopment, and irregular migration, among others. This has given rise to debates about whether security is a problematic social construct. Whom it should be for and how, and it should focus primarily on the well-being of individuals (human security)?This unit provides students with a comprehensive introduction to the history of security and conceptual debates about the term. Internship

War is a primary challenge to international security, peace, and the realisation of human rights. Conflict resolution and peacebuilding have been used to respond to conflicts both between and within states. In this subject we examine the nature and dynamics of political violence paying attention to armed conflict between and within states and structural violence caused by inequality, colonisation, and environmental degradation. This subject also introduces students to the main approaches to conflict resolution and peacebuilding including peace enforcement, state-building, transitional justice, and civil society advocacy. We look at the international, regional, and domestic mechanisms of resolving conflict and account for the perspectives of women, youth, and Indigenous people. Students will learn how to analyse the dimensions of conflict, conduct a conflict assessment, and understand the regional, international, economic, and social dynamics of wars. They will also learn to envision practices of conflict resolution and peacebuilding in relation to a conflict of their choosing. This is a level 2 subject. Please consider the subject pre-requisites before enrolling. This subject includes live sessions with the expectation of student attendance and participation.

War and Peace: Introduction to Conflict Analysis and Peacebuilding

This subject introduces students to laws and policies regulating Cyberspace. It invites students to critically evaluate the sufficiency and effectiveness of laws, policies and industry self-regulation in addressing challenges to government, business and society in an increasingly online world. The subject specifically examines Australian and International Law and practice in this area paying attention to perspectives from legal, political and technological experts.
