This degree is delivered in collaboration with Queensland Health&#39;s Forensic Mental Health Service to provide postgraduate professional training for current or future forensic mental health practitioners, including nurses, psychologists, social workers and psychiatrists. It also provides an extension to undergraduate degrees in nursing, applied science, criminology and criminal justice, and applied psychology. The degree provides advanced training to enhance and develop specialist skills and knowledge to work more effectively with the forensic mental health population. Master of Forensic Mental Health

This postgraduate program provides mental health practitioners and case managers in diverse practice roles with the skills and knowledge to effectively manage programs that support their clients to achieve personal and system goals, as well as work more effectively with people with injury, disability, mental illness, and their significant others.  This includes a wide range of human service and rehabilitation programs supporting diverse populations with complex needs, assisting clients to obtain and maintain employment and supporting people from diverse backgrounds with injury, disability or mental illness to find new ways to lead fulfilling and satisfying lives. You will be introduced to the values, theories, frameworks, principles and skills of person-centred planning, case management, and communication skills, and therefore become more efficient at determining individual need and planning, coordinating and procuring a range of appropriate services and supports to promote the goals of diverse clients. Graduate Certificate in Applied Behaviour Analysis

Rehabilitation counsellors are allied health professionals who work within a counselling and case management framework to assist people who are experiencing disability, a health condition or social disadvantage to participate in employment or education, or to live independently and access services in the community. In this program you will gain the knowledge and skills needed to work as a rehabilitation counsellor in government, insurance, workers compensation and motor accident rehabilitation, disability employment services, the National Injury Insurance Scheme (NIIS), the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) (or equivalent internationally), and private and not-for-profit rehabilitation services.You will learn about vocational evaluation, job placement, injury management, disability studies, applied counselling and research methods. Graduate Certificate in Forensic Mental Health

The Master of Suicidology provides an extension to the existing Graduate Certificate in Suicidology currently offered by the Australian Institute for Suicide Research and Prevention (AISRAP).The program is designed to produce graduates who are knowledgeable and skilled in the identification of a range of concerns regarding suicidal behaviours and their planned management at various levels (including research, public policy, and primary, secondary and tertiary prevention). The program will allow students to explore the historical and sociological development of the complexities of suicide. Furthermore, students will have the opportunity to compare different management methods and identify the advantages and disadvantages of each theoretical approach to treatment and management of suicidal behaviour and its prevention. Students will examine the factors that influence the development and assessment of suicidal behaviours and the ways in which current intervention and prevention strategies deal with these factors.This program does not aim to educate and train students to be clinicians (in the assessment and treatment of suicidal behaviour) but emphasises the importance of scientific and research-based enquiry and investigation at all levels of suicide prevention and intervention.Finally, this program offers two pathways of educational outcomes for students including a final study year focused on either research (dissertation) or coursework (elective courses of relevance to the domain of suicide research and prevention).

This subject examines strategies for changing criminal behaviour. The interventions explored in the subject are most frequently observed within the correctional system in both custodial and community settings; however, programs utilised in other sectors of the criminal justice system (i.e. police, courts) and in affiliated social service organisations are also included in the course where forensic populations are their target treatment group. The subject draws on psychological principles and research evidence, linking theories of crime causation to foundations of behaviour modification and propensity-reducing interventions. A review of specific programs is presented, although the focus of the subject is on the overarching design principles associated with positive client outcomes.Assessment details will be advised at the beginning of the subject offering.

Interventions for Correctional Clients

This subject was previously known as CCJ741.Forensic mental health is an area of specialisation that involves the assessment and treatment of client&#39;s who are both mentally disordered and whose behaviour has led to or could possibly lead to offending. Forensic mental health as a field therefore represents the interface between community safety and client centred practice. The two key intervention targets in FMH are mental disorders and problem behaviours. This subject will address the first of these targets by providing students with knowledge of general mental health interventions and components of recovery/recovery processes. Students will also be provided with skills in the delivery of specific intervention strategies targeting the most common mental health presentations in FMH. Students will also be provided with the opportunity to practice the skill of treatment plan development and role play delivery of specific strategies.

Interventions and Recovery in Forensic Mental Health (Clinical)

The subject considers the most widely accepted approaches, in Forensic Mental Health (FMH), to risk assessment. Subject content primarily focuses upon the prediction of an individual&#39;s likelihood of harming other or being harmed by others. Risk and protective factors are examined beyond that of a present based individual level to include an understanding of developmental and environmental factors. The utility and applicability of different risk assessment tools is also considered as a component of an effective functional analysis and more broadly risk management in Forensic Mental Health.

Risk Assessment and Management in Forensic Mental Health

It is conservatively estimated that 70% of forensic mental health (FMH) clients in Australia are males of functioning intelligence who have English as their preferred language and who align themselves with the dominant Australian culture. As they comprise such a large proportion of the FMH client group, the majority of resources and interventions are targeted towards them. This then means that there are a number of minority populations within FMH, who without our intentional investment and understanding would not receive effective assessment, intervention and management. This subject examines the special needs of these minority FMH groups, namely the specific needs of the elderly, adolescents, women, people with an intellectual disability, people of a different culture or language, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

Minority Populations in Forensic Mental Health

This subject will provide a practical understanding of how risk assessment and management is utilised within forensic mental health. This will include a foundation of the key principles for evaluating risk assessment tools, management processes and professional writing in forensic mental health. This subject will then build upon this foundation to provide students with an understanding of how these principles apply in the assessment and management of different offender populations. Students will follow and apply their learning to a number of client case studies across these population groups. Advanced Risk Assessment and Management in Forensic Mental Health

This subject examines the relationship between mental disorder and criminal offending. The subject aims to increase students&#39; knowledge and understanding of models of criminal behaviour and mental disorders, and the potential interaction between the two. The subject aims to develop in students a critical appreciation of the issues involved in defining both mental disorder and criminality, and an evidence-based understanding of the extent to which criminal behaviour is caused by mental disorder. The subject also addresses specific mental disorders, in the context of their potential relationship with criminal offending. Investigate the legal constructs of insanity and the psychiatric constructs of intellectual disability and mental disorders. Evaluate the relationship between crime, dangerousness and mental disorders in the context of forensic mental health.

Mental Disorder and Crime

This subject examines the areas in which the criminal justice system and psychological theories of behaviour interact. Topics include the reliability of eyewitness testimony, truthfulness and credibility of witnesses, questioning child victims of sexual assault, the social dynamics of juries and the role of expert testimony.
In this subject, we study the roles of various actors that interact in the courtroom, such as judges, juries, expert witnesses, eyewitnesses, victims and defendants.null; The subject introduces interdisciplinary literatures: criminology, law and society/socio-legal studies, and psychology.null; Topics include the social dynamics of juries, judicial discretion, the validity of forensic science and the role of expert testimony, the reliability of eyewitness testimony, an examination of mental health courts and indigenous justice, and the prevalence of wrongful convictions.
