Communication Research Skills equips you with foundational knowledge and skills needed to research a range of communication forms, practices, audiences, and institutions. It is comprised of two modules. Foundations (Weeks 1-5) deals with the following topics: using the university library and other information resources; academic writing formats, skills and strategies; effective study practices and habits; and the work contexts and ethics of communication research. Methods (Weeks 6-10) introduces key methodologies used in researching communication texts, practices and users/audiences: semiotic analysis, content analysis, quantitative techniques, and qualitative techniques.

Communication Research Skills

This subject develops your understanding of the aesthetic, social and economic significance of visual culture by critically examining visual art practices, photography, film and television, style and fashion, advertising, news media genres and exhibitionary technologies. You will develop familiarity with a range of visual languages, genres and cultural industries, historical and contemporary practices of visual culture.

Visual Culture

This subject is a postgraduate level introduction to the interdisciplinary practice of Communication Studies. It identifies key features of communication as a field of study: forms of communication; theories and histories of mass communications media; the diverse and evolving field of Australian mass media communications; and media communications issues in 21st century public policy and politics. The subject identifies key communication research traditions and examines their characteristic concepts, themes and issues.
