This subject was previously known as BLW22.Studying this subject will introduce you to the Australian Taxation System and get you to critically consider the various aspects of the taxation legislation with a focus on Income Tax, Fringe Benefit Tax, Goods and Services Tax and Capital Gains Tax as well as a detailed investigation into the taxing of various tax entities used in Australia. You will be exposed to considering the global aspect of taxation and how foreign companies and individuals are treated for tax purposes in Australia. Being a tax professional is a privileged position but it comes with both social and ethical responsibilities and in this unit we will identify these as well as taking a detailed looked at the various bodies associated with the administration and review of the Australian Taxation System such as the Australia Taxation Office, Inspector General of Taxation and the Tax Practitioners Board. Jump inside the Australian tax system and get to know the legislation. Study up on capital gains tax, income tax and goods and services tax. Work out the taxable income for a company. Develop an understanding of how partnerships and trusts work.

This subject was previously known as Special Topics in Australian Tax Law.By studying this subject you will be building upon your existing knowledge obtained from BLW32 Introduction to Australian Taxation Law and expanding this knowledge into Western Australian state taxes as well as employment taxes. On completion of this subject you will have obtained the knowledge to distinguish between Commonwealth and State tax systems and be able to demonstrate this through research methods, expand on understanding the language of taxing statutes in order to apply their provisions to situations you may come across in your career and to obtain the ultimate aim of achieving a high level of competency in reading and using tax legislation which is paramount for any tax career. As well as state taxes we will consider taxes and concepts associated with employment such as Fringe Benefits Tax, Superannuation, Salary Packaging and how payouts are taxed on cessation of employment. Get to know Australian tax laws—from Commonwealth through to State taxation systems. Apply your research skills to probe legislative issues around primary production and substantiation and cars. Get practical and calculate taxes including stamp duty. 

Indirect, State and Employment Taxes

This subject was previously known as Tax Structures. Taxpayers in business often have a choice to which business entity they will use to run their business operations through, there are several choices available to them including sole trader, partnerships, trusts and companies and with all of them come different tax issues and decisions that need to be made. You will be exposed into looking at complex taxation matters surrounding these entities such as Division 7A and the recently debated Sec 100A which has been contentious, as well as Small Business Concessions and Capital Gains Tax Concessions which all tax professional must have an understanding of. Cryptocurrency and crowd funding are new forms of financing businesses and we look at the tax consequences associated with them along with more traditional forms of financing, we use an expert tax professional in the area of crypto to help you with these concepts. You will also have a mentor from a Big 4 practice to work with in relation to your business project in this course. Tax avoidance and evasion are the dark side to taxation and participation in them can lead to large fines and incarceration so we will spend some time looking at the laws surrounding the anti- avoidance legislation and examine some high profile cases that have seen the ATO and taxpayers in battle. Taxation of Business Structures

This subject was previously known as Australian Tax Law Cases.Taxation is a law, it&#39;s created and passed in the Parliament and given Royal Assent thus becoming legislated laws taxpayers must abide by, but the interpretation of the law may be seen differently by the taxpayers and the ATO, so here enters the courts where cases on tax laws are determined. Within this subject of study, you get to interpret and review seminal cases and legislation that form the foundation of the Australian taxation system in which everyone participates. Australia Taxation Law Cases

This subject was previously known as BLW41 Tax Administration.The aims of Taxation Administration are to give you a basic understanding of the administration of the Australian Taxation system and the role various authorities play in the administration of taxation laws. The subject introduces you to the requirements to lodge an annual income tax return and associated elections, which then result in the Australian Taxation Office issuing an assessment. We will consider the various means by which outstanding taxation payments can be collected by the ATO. Disputes are common regarding the imposition of taxation and a review of the objection and appeals process will be considered. As the administrator of the Australian taxation system we will consider in depth the role of the Australian Taxation Office including their legislated powers. As a means of deterring taxpayers from not complying with their taxation affairs a strict penalty regime is imposed. Other areas we will consider will be the use of ATO Rulings and the role of a Tax Professional. We will also consider the Commissioner’s remedial power, some state taxation administration powers and topical issues in taxation administration. Studying this subject will immerse you in the dynamic world of international tax which is full of rewarding career opportunities for tax professionals. Within the subject we will cover off on looking at anti-avoidance mechanisms that are employed by governments to combat international tax avoidance methods used by multinational companies and how the majority of tax authorities worldwide joined together with the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) to create agreements to cease this type of avoidance behaviour. Double tax agreements play an important role in the international tax arena to who has the taxing rights of taxpayers who reside in corresponding countries, you will get to dive into some of these and see how Australian works co-operatively with other countries. Another aspect of a career in international tax is the ability to advise clients who operate international businesses therefore we will consider the structuring and use of international tax planning as we work our way through the course. Playing a major part of international tax is for advisors to act in the most ethical and socially responsible manner and we look at the consequences of not sticking to these fundamental principles.
